I chose to put it on my deck post, by drilling a hole in the top of the post, and sliding the rod inside.
It would be nice if the manufacturer added an alternate base plate that could be screwed on to a flat surface.
Product has stood up well in all types of weather including storms, 60 mph wind gusts, snow, etc.
