GM8908 LCD Digital Wind Speed Temperature Measure Gauge Anemometer Review

PROS: +low cost +cloudy days easy to read LCD. CONS: -propeller will stop at low wind speed. -must be aimed at wind direction. -screen often difficult to read without back light -at least 3mph wind needed for first readout. * * I wish the back light would stay on some +0.5 seconds longer to have more time to get the readout. The propeller has 'friction' caused by the DC motor / generator magnetic cogging effect. If the wind drops below minimum the propeller will stop. In AVG/Current mode: there will be a bogus wind speed readout like 12.8 mph when the propeller is stalled. The readout randomly jumps wildly up and down after propeller has stopped, as hand movements make the propeller move minute fractions of a full turn. The readout becomes valid when the propeller begins to spin again. A bit of annoyance. I could not figure out how to make MAX mode work. The random jump up after stopped propeller will always exceed the true wind speed. Could not figure out how to reset MAX value. Could not find manual on internet.

It would be great if there were some affordable mini cup anemometers out there. The GM8908 meter must be turned into the prevalent wind direction, and must check if propeller is still spinning before accepting readout. I found omnidirectional Windtronic2 product, but unfortunately it was relatively expensive at $99. I would probably been better off with cups + dc motor on a stick + wired to analog voltmeter design for kiting purposes. Anyways: silk paper ribbons helps me finding the direction where to point the meter at.

My impressions after setting this up:

While it's nice that they include a battery in the package, it is not easy to figure out how to insert that battery into the unit to get it working. Nothing about how to insert the battery is in the instructions -- frustrating. So here are some tips for other buyers:

1) Peel off the orange cover so that it separates from the black unit.
2) Use a coin (a quarter for US users) to unscrew the battery cover. Move it back and forth several times, opening and closing the cover, to loosen up the plastic cover a bit.
3) Get a standard screwdriver with a thin blade, and gently pry open the cover.
4) Insert the battery so that the "+" is facing up.
5) Batter cover back on with your coin.
6) Test out unit by pressing MODE button for two seconds.
7) Using a paperclip, change the Temperature unit to Fahrenheit if desired.
8) Put orange plastic cover back on.

At this point, you can follow the instructions to finish setting up the unit. They are written in Borat English so they aren't the clearest instructions I've ever read.

Other thoughts:

Unit is thicker than I expected. If you want to put this into a coat pocket or lifejacket it will be somewhat bulky.

Save the instructions, clunky as they are, since it isn't all that easy to figure out how to use the device. Here are two examples:

Example one: there's no ON button -- instead you press MODE for two seconds to turn on. (ProTip for the designers of this product: Buttons that turn on a device are usually labelled "ON". Weird convention, I know.)

Example two: if you turn on the unit by pressing mode for two seconds, how do you think you'd turn it off? You'd think it's by pressing MODE for two seconds. But nope, that'd be two easy. You press MODE and SET at the same time. Obviously! (ProTip for the designers: ON buttons usually turn a device on AND off. You know, like a light switch or a laptop.)

Handheld Anemometer Wind Speed Meter with Temperature Measurement, Lanyard & Carry Case Review

This was the most difficult to open battery cover I have ever encountered. Any screwdriver that I tried just mashed the soft plastic and attempt to use a groove to slide it open scratched up the back of the case. I finally got it open with a stiff hooked tweezer type computer tool hooked over the side of the case. I had considered returning it before I got it open, but the back was so damaged by the time I got it open, that I doubt if a return would have been authorized.

Once open, I discovered that a battery was included, but had thin plastic between the contacts to prevent it from being used up ahead of time. So, the battery I bought for it separately is a spare for the future.

I was able to change the default M/S (miles per second?) to MPH and the default celcius to farenheit easily. So, it seems to work just fine. I just hope that I can get the battery cover off again when the battery dies.

Please note that I received a HoldPeak HP-816A anemometer. This is NOT the one in the main picture, but is shown in the second picture with a lanyard attached. Actually, if I had realized this was the same model as the one $6 cheaper, I wouldn't have gotten it. I hope it doesn't have the same problem as that one with the vane falling out.

Davis Replacement Anemometer Part #6410 Review

I installed this anemometer on my roof so I could get more accurate wind direction and speed measurements than with the anemometer built into my Vantage Vue weather station. I also had to purchase the Anemometer Transmitter Kit ($170), in order to wirelessly transmit the wind data to my Vantage Vue console. I installed both on a metal pole ($5), attached to my roof using a Winegard SW-0012 Gable End Mount ($27). It was very simple and straightforward following the instructions to connect it to the transmitter. I have noticed a VAST improvement to the consistency of the wind direction during periods of sustained wind. The one on my Vantage Vue would be all over the place, because of all the spurious eddies. This is because it was 1) only 5-feet off the ground and 2) it hung below the Vantage Vue unit and near the pole the unit is attached to. The only thing I didn't like about this device was that it cost me over $300 when including all the other items I had to buy with it.

Pole Mount Anemometer Review

I ran the wires for this thing underground for at least 40'. They advertise that any wire will work. I used some old real fine gauge speaker wire. The whole unit works fine, even in the gentlest of breezes. Highest wind that I've noticed so far is in the upper 20s. Its been installed for at least a month. If I have any complaint its the size of the readout. It would be nice if they had a readout specifically designed for the anemometer, rather than the tiny one adapted from a bicycle speedometer, but hey, it works. The Inspeed Vortex website has a great selection of anemometer options and a sense of humor. They appear to be the kind of company that tries to offer the kinds of products they'd like to be able to find if they were their own customer. They offer maintenance kits and replacement parts in case something does happen to go wrong, which is unlike LaCrosse. In my experience if something goes wrong with a Lacrosse product you're outta luck getting any help fixing it.

the wind meter works quite well. The compass is flakey. Instructions are not very good. You have to set the unit for your elevation with no instructions on how to find your elevation. As you turn the compass, it will jump 30 - 40 degrees, and then back.
