My husband and I are Purple Martin Landlords. We have had great success with these Super Gourds and our birds seem to prefer Super Gourds over other gourds and produce more young because the larger size of these gourds accommodates it. The gourds are made of high-density polyethylene plastic with ultraviolet inhibitors which not only makes them very durable and long-lasting, but also makes them very easy to clean and disinfect when necessary. They have a water-tight threaded access port with a screw on cap that makes nest checks easy and a molded-in rain canopy that is textured so that Martins can easily perch without slipping. There are six 1/4" drain holes in the bottom of each gourd to allow any rain water blown in the entrance hole to exit the gourd. And there is one set of 7/32" pre-drilled side to side hanging holes. These crescent entrance hole Super Gourds are Starling resistant. Starlings will nest in Martin gourds and then chase away any Martins interested in the surrounding gourds. Even if a gourd has already been claimed by Martins, Starlings will harass the occupants and try and run them off. They will enter a gourd and destroy Martin eggs and young and if they find adults inside they will attack them with their sharp beaks sometimes fatally wounding them.
Super Gourds can be purchased with either round or crescent shaped entrances. We use both, because although crescent holes are Starling resistant, some Martins will not use them. To make crescent hole gourds more appealing to Martins, we use one-piece aluminum porches that clip over the bottom of the gourds crescent entrance hole, allowing easier access by Martins, while still resisting most Starlings. These can't be purchased through Amazon but you can buy them from The Purple Martin Conservation Association (PMCA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of Purple Martins, for about $2.50 each. They can also be found for less elsewhere online.
We use a 12 unit pole and rack system for our Super Gourds. It is made of high tensile aluminum and can be easily raised and lowered when necessary by way of a rope and pulley system. I haven't been able to find it here on Amazon (I wish they carried it), but you can get it online from Amish Gourds out of York, PA, for around $262. This is the best price we have found for it on the net.
